Perception vs. Deception

White House press secretary Tony Snow appeared on CNN's "Late Edition" this Sunday. He said: "The president understands peoples' impatience -- not impatience, but how a war can wear on a nation. He understands that. If somebody had taken a poll in the Battle of the Bulge, I dare say people would have said, 'Wow, my goodness, what are we doing here?' But you cannot conduct a war based on polls."

Is Tony Snow a complete idiot? Is it any wonder that this administration would pick this guy as their public spokesperson?

Can this moron really be attempting to equate the Iraq War and WWII? Does he think public opinion polls were invented around the same time as his porcelain veneers?

In fact, there was a poll taken by Gallup from Dec. 31, 1944, to Jan. 4, 1945 -- three years into that war and right in the middle of the bloody Battle of the Bulge, where U.S. casualties were estimated between 70,000 and 80,000. That is 30 times the number of troops that we have lost in Iraq to date.

At that time, the poll found that 73 percent of Americans would refuse to make peace with Adolf Hitler if he offered it.

It also found that 86 percent of Americans thought there was no chance that we would lose the war in Europe.

That is called public resolve dick weed. During WWII Americans knew that the cost would be unbearably high, but they knew full well the historical ramifications. Failure to defeat Hitler was not an option.

A public opinion poll taken this month right after U.S. forces had killed al-Zarqawi, found that 59 percent of adults still say the United States made a mistake in going to war in Iraq

My Grandfather died at the Battle of the Bulge. I obviously never got to meet him, but I am proud that he gave his life for something that changed the course of history.

Y'know, we study about WWII and F.D.R. and it all seems so clear cut. Hitler was evil, the Japanese attacked us, we went to war. End of story.
This Iraq thing is such a mess. We were lied to about the motives and are continuing to be lied to about what's actually going on there. And leave it to the Bush administration to appoint a guy who can barely speak coherently to be the White House spokesperson. (sigh)

If I dare play devil's advocate, it is Tony Snow's job to a) not answer any questions [i.e. respond in non sequiturs all the time] and b) say really stupid things.

During the last real war WW2, we were fighting a country and its dictator.

We are fighting an ideal this time around..we can not compare these apples to those oranges. It doesnt work,no matter how much spin the Shrub and Snow put on it, no matter what they call it(war on terror). Its an occupation of a country that did nothing to us..they do however have lots and lots of oil.

Al Gore was on Charlie Rose last week, he spent almost half his hour talking about Iraq.. he said things that most of the left has been blogging about for years now. Its a good interview with Al and I suggest anyone that wants to see it go to google video and watch it. Charlie's shows are all up on Google.
