Waiting on a friend
I am not really very interested in politics, relationships or this blog right now. In fact, I am not very interested in anything but seeing my best friend get completely better.
My cat Manhattan just turned thirteen last March. She has suddenly, and without warning, stopped eating anything.
Last week, I took her to the Animal Hospital in the borough that shares her name. For the modest fee of $1200.00, they hydrated her with electrolyte fluid during an overnight stay and informed me that she definitely has an over-active thyroid condition.
However, as you can see from this website, hyperthyroidism will cause excessive thyroid hormone in the blood stream and it will speed up most chemical reactions in the body. This includes increased appetite and increased thirst.
Although she had exhibited some of those warning signs in the past, as of the end of last week all her interest in food and water is gone.
If any of you have any experience with cats, and have seen this problem please let me know. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

As I have never really owned a cat, I have no advice for you, except to say I hope your friend gets well soon.
damn peter, my cat mr kitty did the same thing and was diagnosed with the same thing. i was desolate. its very treatable. the least intrusive is medically with methimazole once or twice a day. you can get it in a topical form that can be rubbed on the inside if the ear. you can radiate the thyroid or even remove it as well. fluid treatments can be done at home by you subcutaneously. it is VERY disturbing and mister kitty showed signs that i wasnt aware of were caused by that. VOMITING, HAIR LOSS, IRRITABILITY, he would stop grooming himself and ended up loosing alot of weight. Peter feline hyperthyroidism is highly treatable and mister kitty is doing GREAT!!!!! he is my best friend too. there is also kidney friendly prescription food that is easier on the kidneys. lower protein and more water content. mister got tired of that food but if it is jsut hyperthyroidism then it is very treatable.
I had to give mister subcutaneous lactated ringers solution treatments daily, then every other day then, eventually stopped them as he was getting enough fluids. Peter, I know how upset I was, and i thought he was a goner but he has recovered beautifully. there are different theories about how cats get this but at this point it sounds like you caught it. it can affect his liver and kidney and mister kitty's numbers were completely whacked. so whacked that the vet was sure he had a liver tumour but after a month or two of treatments and fluids his numbers were remarkably back to normal.
if you want, feel free to email me thru my profile email on my blog. i now have mister on the medication twice a day.
Sorry your cat isn't feeling well. I have a cat too. Blue. I would feel awful if she were sick. Sounds like the fourth person has a lot of good advice.
Dear Peter,
As i know you are aware, i know exactly what you are dealing with right now. My heart, spirit and thoughts are definitely with you and Manhattan... i will keep you both in my prayers.
And someone should speak to God about making animals' lives longer... and without pain or discomfort as well.
Please let us know how you and Manhattan are doing when you feel up to it.
Post or e-mail me if you need an 'ear.' kbperes at hotmail dot com
Hugs,
K and Mat
how is Manhattan doing?
Please check in, Peter.
Thinking of Manhattan!!! And you...
Manhattan is doing much better. She ended her hunger strike and has being eating small meals. It must be fresh tuna in its own water for her to get really excited.
However, she seems to be sneezing and sniffling a lot since coming back from the animal hospital. This new cold must be a special bonus they throw in with the $1200.00 overnight bill.
In addition, her owner (Moi) has been running a 102.5 fever for several days now. Every muscle in my body aches and I can stand for only a few hours each day. It feels like someone hit me at the junction of my head and neck with an oak baseball bat.
I am also booked to AD a job with Academy Award winner Sam Waterston in six days time. This is a major opportunity that I really do not want to miss out on.
I have never experienced so much collective sickness in all my life.
I will get back to my lazy blog posting schedule once my head stops throbbing.
Thank you all for the concern regarding Manhattan. Let's hope Mattie from Pieces Place is also feeling much better. I am going to go check now.
Excuse the typo.
It is Kleopatra's blog, which is called "Pisces Place".
I must have been hungry.
I checked it out, and Mattie looks to be doing much better.
Also weird that we posted in the same minute.
COINCIDENCE?
Hello P and M,
:o) The world is such an interesting place... this connection we four seem to have, certainly worth considering for a minute.
Mattie is only eating fresh chicken (weird for me to buy that... at Trader Joe's) with fresh bread. Tuna on your collective end there, 'eh?
Picky, picky, picky. Manhattan and her are definitely on the same wavelength, no?
i'm so excited for you with the upcoming job, that is gonna be fab-U-lous!
And you... YOU GET BETTER SOON, you!
Keeping the good vibes goin' from San Diego for you both...
K and M
